With the start up of USD 353 schools less than a week away, here’s a quick review of the Crusader Wrestling programs to this point in the season. Lots more action is about to kick in, on the mats. (see upcoming schedule below)

The Varsity Wrestlers have wrestled 115 matches, winning 71 one of them. It’s a young squad overall but are being lead by “2” veteran Crusaders we’ve grown accustomed to watching on the mats in the past. Senior Kanden Young (195 lbs) is presently 15-0 and Junior Kenny Fehrman (220 lbs) 14-0, to account for almost half of the squad’s wins at this juncture. Anna CullensĀ  (113 lbs.) and brother Michael (138 lbs.) are settling in and finding success at their respective weight classes, Anna presently 9-4, Michael 8-4. Kaitlyn Hain (130 lbs) is 7-2, combination V and JV.

Exciting news was announced just recently, one of the “4” Regional 4A Boys Wrestling Tournaments will be held here at WHS on Feb. 21-22. 14 teams, including host Wellington, will try to qualify their wrestlers for the State 4A Tournament in Salina, the following weekend. (Feb. 28-29) The TOP 4 finishers in each weight class will advance from each of the “4” Regionals. The other “3” 4A Regionals will be held at Concordia HS, Garnett-Anderson Co HS and Louisburg HS. Information about the “Girls” Regionals is pending, Girls State Wrestling (All Classes), is slated 1 day earlier than the boys, in Salina (also @ Tony’s Pizza Events Center, formerly the Bicentennial Center), on Thursday, Feb. 27th.

The JV Wrestlers are a solid bunch. Out of the 68 JV matches thus far, the Crusaders have won 44 of them. Freshman Jakob Lira (152 lbs) is 10-1 in JV action, classmate Taylen Ramirez (145 lbs) 7-2. Freshman Devion Smith (132 lbs) is 3-0 in JV action AND 4-2 on the Varsity mats. Sophomores Chase Koehler (130 lbs) and Nic Norris (120 lbs) are 5-3 and 4-1 respectively.
