This year’s DUCHESS CANDIDATES:
L to R:
Abby Tredway, Jessica Walker, Gabby Stout, Lauren Bales and Calli Hatfield
As always our main goal this year is to do as much as possible while keeping the safety of our students as the number one priority. That being said, our fall homecoming week will look a little different this year.
Unfortunately, due to health guidelines we will not be able to have the traditional homecoming parade/pep rally on Thursday night, or the traditional WHS homecoming dance after the football game. However, we are still planning some fun activities for our students. Here is a list of activities that we will be having for the week:
Spirit Week: We will still have our theme days and have students dressing up to celebrate each day. Pictures can be taken, but mask need to be worn and social distancing should be maintained
WHS Sidewalk Decorating: To replace the class float building activity we will allow students to decorate designated parts of the sidewalk at WHS for their class with sidewalk chalk. Seniors and Freshman will be given spots in the back of the school at the student entrance, Juniors and Sophomores will be given spots in the front of the school at the visitor entrance. Times will be provided on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings for this like the traditional float building times. WHS staff members will supervise students during this time. Like float building, this will be a competition between the grades with the winning grade being announced on Friday. Designs must be school appropriate. Mask and social distancing are required to participate.
Friday Duchess Pep Rally: We will still have the Friday Duchess Pep rally for WHS students and staff. This event will be at the football field. On Friday, Oct. 2nd, WHS will be dismissed at 2:15pm and students wishing to participate may come to the football field for the pep rally at 2:30pm. The Duchess candidates, WHS band, cheer, and dance teams will be dismissed at 2pm for this event. Again mask and social distancing will be required if you attend this event. All WHS students are able to attend this event. We will make this event as traditional as possible by introducing all the candidates, having performances by the band, cheer, dance teams, introducing the football team and having Coach Aguilar speak. WHS students will be dismissed for the day from the football field. This event will be live-streamed on the Wellington High School NFHS network: https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/wellington-high-school-wellington-ks
Football Game: Our varsity football game will be vs Rose Hill on Friday, Oct. 2nd and will start at 7 pm. We will crown the 2020 Duchess at halftime of the game. We will still have to follow the capacity restrictions, so you will need a ticket to get into the stadium. WHS football, band, cheer, and dance teams will get 4 tickets per person. The Duchess candidates, escorts and child escorts will also get 4 tickets per person, and the visiting team will get 2 tickets per person. This will put us at capacity for this event and we will not have any extra tickets to give out. Mask and social distancing will be required. Families may sit together as household units, but should be 6 feet from others. Masks should be worn when entering/exiting the stadium, common places like the restroom or concession stand, and anytime that social distancing can NOT be maintained. This event will be live-streamed on the Wellington High School NFHS network: https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/wellington-high-school-wellington-ks
As always, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but appreciate your help and cooperation in making this event a success.
Thank you and Go Big Red,
Luke Smith Wellington Athletic/Activity Director
