Crusaders Win 4 of 5 vs Vikings!

In the first action this calendar year, the Crusader and Lady Crusader basketball squads got off to a good start Tuesday, hosting their counterparts from Winfield.

For the 3rd consecutive set of games (@ Rose Hill 12/17 & HERE vs Mulvane 12/20), our Lady Crusaders SWEPT their opponent…the latest, Winfield HERE on 01/07. The Varsity win moves their season record to 4-2, the JV continue to forget the letter “L” exists in the English vernacular and are now 6-0! After the game, Head Coach Eric Adams shared these thoughts:

“I am very proud of this very young and gritty squad! They play each and every possession like its their last and represent this school and community in a first class way. It was a great win tonight over a very good and well-coached Winfield squad, to move to 4-2 on the season. Love this team!”

Congratulations to both squads!!

The Crusaders chalked up 2 wins in 3 games Tuesday evening in their 2020 opener here at HOME vs the Winfield Vikings. Exciting action, especially in the varsity game. The Crusaders, lead by Senior Austin Soles with 21 pts. and Junior Tanner Meyer with 20, were up by a dozen at halftime and somewhat in control. Winfield chipped away at that lead, reducing it to an 8 pt deficit after 3. The Vikings put more oars in the water in the 4th and nearly paddled into a victory. Winfield came up 1 pt shy of sending the contest to OT fortunately, and Wellington goes to .500 on the season, now 3-3.

Coach Newman had these post-game remarks,

“It wasn’t pretty, but we managed to come out with a win. It was great to see smiling faces again in the locker room after a game. Early on we showed flashes of being a solid basketball team. Specifically in the first quarter. However, in the second half we stopped moving on offense, which forced us to take contested jump shots or turn the ball over. Free throws continue to be a concern as we went 11/22.  The 17 point lead we built in the first half ended up being the difference in the game. Overall, solid performance and a great win. Now we must move on and prepare for a tough Clearwater team.”

The JV squad continues to battle. Winfield’s JV jumped out early, up 17-4 after 1 and 36-18 at half. The “C” Team squad had “4” young men in double figures, and chalked up their 4th win in 5 games, downing their young Viking counterparts 55-48. Logan Swingle lit it up again with 18. RJ Clift, Korbin Jones and Trent Bannister had the “hot hands” as well.
