It was semi-final action in Rose Hill Friday evening for the Lady Crusaders, Lady Vikings, Lady Rockets and Lady Wildcats. In the opener, our very own WHS Lady Crusaders pulled away in the 2nd half vs Winfield, much like the Crusaders on Thursday did vs Rose Hill. Up only 4 at half, the Wellington girls Friday doubled their score by 3rd quarters' end and added another 15 down the stretch to defeat the Lady Vikings and send them packing for another year, final score Wellington 57 Winfield 38.
With the Lady Crusaders on the road to their semi-final game at the 44th annual Haven Wildcat Classic, it was only "BOYS" in the house on Friday out at WHS as the CRUSADERS hosted the VIKINGS from Winfield and when all the buzzers had sounded, the "BOYS" in red had taken care of business.
The holiday break did not take any toll on the WMS Lady Knight basketball squads...all "4" were in action here at home on Thursday, all "4" walked away with smiles and "W's" - a great start to the 2017 calendar portion of the season. The SWEEP moves the combined record thus far for all "4" squads to 25-3, 3 of the 4 are UNDEFEATED!!
After superb play in Pratt last weekend at the 4A Regional Girls Tennis Tournament, all "6" Wellington girls, having qualified for bigger and better things, set their sights on State 4A action in Winfield this weekend with mixed results.
Game one of district play was decided by one point. Winfield snatched a pivotal overtime win at Wellington on October 14. It was historical night that was destined to go down in Crusader lore no matter the outcome. Former Wellington coaches Linn Hibbs and T.D. Buck are in their first season coaching for Winfield. The 2001 Hibbs-lead Crusader state championship football team was on hand celebrating their 15th anniversary, and was recognized at halftime. Wellington's first year Head Coach, Zane Aguilar was a member of that '01 squad.
It will be a Crusader-Rocket double feature in the 4A Sub-State Championships to be played in at WHS on March 5. Wellington's boys defeated Winfield on March 4, 68-53. The boys in red were on fire from the free-throw line, going 17/18. Ian King and Cade Phelps lead the team with 16 points each.
Breaking News: Former Wellington Head Football Coach Linn Hibbs has accepted the head coaching position at Winfield HS for next school year. He and his family moved to Shawnee Mission after the 2011 Football Season where he coached at Shawnee Mission NW for 3 seasons.
Coach Hibbs indicated he is excited to return to this area, he interviewed for the job a couple weeks ago and it was offered last evening. He will be returning to this area and will meet up against his old alma mater next season in WEEK #7, here at Sellers Park!
