The annual Wendy's Heisman Trophy Awards Luncheon was held Tuesday in Wichita at Abode Venue. The luncheon is in recognition of outstanding student athletes from all over Kansas. High School administrators nominate students from their respective schools for the honor. Wellington High School was proud to nominate Seniors Connor Burnett and Lauryn Snipes who, along with their parents / grandparents attended the luncheon today, a luncheon also attended by Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims from the University of Oklahoma.

The Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship was created by by Wendy's founder Dave Thomas in 1994. Dave Thomas dropped out of high school when he was 15 years old inorder to work full-time and went on to become one of the most successfull entrepreneurs in history. While this nontraditional path led to his prosperity, it always worried Dave that others would follow and expect to achieve similar fame and wealth by not finishing high school or attending college.

Faced with his dilemma, at 61 years old, Dave enrolled at Coconut Creek High School in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. and received his General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Inspired by this moment and with a desire to celebrate the achievements of youth in America, 22 years later, Wendy's has awarded nearly $2 Million to support education while honoring more than 600,000 of the nation's most esteemed high school scholar-athletes!

To be eligible for nomination, the student-athlete must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants also need to be proven leaders and role models within their school and community. And applicants lmust perform in at least one of the 43 school sponsored  sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games or the National Federation of State High School Associations.

20 finalists (10 males / 10 females) will advance on to be STATE FINALISTS in every State and the District of Columbia and the State Winners then advance on to be National Finalists. Eventually, an overall male and female winner are determined nationally and will be featured on the Heisman Trophy telecast and also awarded $10K Scholarships!

Congratulations again to both Connor and Lauryn - both represent Wellington so well - we are proud of you!
